It is narrated from the Kab that:
He is called the Mahdi since He has a secret power, which cannot be known by anyone.
Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman
One interpretation runs:
All external sciences can be studied or researched by anyone whenever they wish. But there is also "innate" knowledge that cannot be obtained by studying, that Allah bestows as a blessing to servants of His choosing. The reference in the above account, "not known by anyone," suggests that the Mahdi will possess such knowledge. (Allah knows the truth)
It is also very likely that this knowledge represents "Ilm Al-ladun." Surat al-Kahf refers to similar knowledge in a story about the Prophet Musa (as) and an unnamed holy individual. (This individual is identified as Khidhr in accounts.)
They found a slave of Ours whom We had granted mercy from Us and whom We had also given knowledge direct from Us. (Surat al-Kahf: 65)
Musa said to him, 'May I follow you on condition that you teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?' (Surat al-Kahf: 66)
He said, 'You will not be able to bear with me. (Surat al-Kahf: 67)
How indeed could you bear with patience something you have not encompassed in your knowledge?' (Surat al-Kahf: 68)
Musa said, "You will find me patient, if Allah wills, and I will not disobey you in any matter." (Surat al-Kahf: 69)
He said, "Then if you follow me, do not question me about anything until I myself make mention of it to you."(Surat al-Kahf: 70)
