TAUHID-ASAS-ASAS KEIMANAN

(A.PENGERTIAN IMAN)

Our Prophet (saas) has described the time and signs of Hazrat Mahdi's (as) coming, his moral and physical attributes and even his name in great detail

Our Prophet (saas) has described the time and signs of Hazrat Mahdi's (as) coming, his moral and physical attributes and even his name in great detail

AN EXAMPLE FOR THE STUDENTS OF NUR WHO CLAIM THAT THE TIME OF THE COMING AND NAME OF HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS NOT KNOWN

1. THE CLAIM THAT “WE ARE TOLD NOTHING ABOUT THE TIME OF THE COMING OF THE INDIVIDUALS OF THE END TIMES” IS ERRONEOUS

The hadiths of our Prophet (saas) and statements made by Master Bediuzzaman Said Nursi in the light of those hadiths clearly provide information about the timing of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and the Prophet Jesus (as) in the End Times.
What confuses some of our brother students of the Nur is that the Master has said that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will not appear until the End Times. The Master also said that the Great Mahdi of the End Times would appear in the century after his own. But he also said that Muslims have been expecting Hazrat Mahdi (as) to appear every century since the death of our Prophet (saas) and have imagined that this coming would take place at a time very close to their own day:

EIGHTH PRINCIPLE: In this arena of trial and realm of examination, Almighty Allah, the Absolutely Wise One, conceals most important things in the midst of numerous others, and this is tied to many purposes, benefits, and instances of wisdom. For example, He has hidden the Night of Power in the whole of Ramadan, and the hour when prayers are answered in the whole of Friday, and well-accepted saints among the people generally, and the appointed hour in a person’s life-time, and the time of the Judgment Day in the life of the world. For if the time of man’s death had been specified, the first half of his life would be passed in absolute heedlessness and the second, in terror, like going step by step to the gallows. Whereas for the balance between this world and the next to be preserved, and to remain perpetually between hope and fear, living and dying have to be possible every moment. In which case, twenty years of uncertain life are preferable to a thousand years of life that are specified.
Thus, the Last Day is the appointed hour of the world, the macroanthropos. If the time had been specified, all the early and middle ages would have been plunged into absolute heedlessness, and the latter centuries, into terror. Just as in his personal life man is concerned with the continued existence of his home and village, so in his social life and as a member of mankind he is concerned with the continued existence of the earth and the world. The Qur’an says, The Hour has drawn nigh. (Surat al-Qamar, 1) That is, the Judgment Day is near. It still not having come after a thousand or this many years does not negate its closeness. Because the Judgment Day is the appointed hour of the world, and in relation to the life of the world one or two thousand years are like one or two minutes in relation to a year. The Hour of the Judgment Day is not only the appointed hour of mankind that it should be related to it and seen as distant. It is because of this that the Absolutely Wise One conceals the Judgment Day in His knowledge among the ‘Five Hidden Things.’ It is due to the mystery of this vagueness that every age including the Age of the Bliss, the Age of the Prophet, people have been frightened of the end of the world. Some of them even said that the conditions had all but appeared.
Thus, unfair people who do not know this truth say: “Why did the Companions of the Prophet with their vigilant hearts and keen sight, who had been taught all the details of the hereafter, SUPPOSE A FACT THAT WOULD OCCUR ONE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED YEARS LATER TO BE CLOSE TO THEIR CENTURY, as though their ideas had deviated a thousand years from the truth?”
The Answer: Because, through the effulgence of the Prophet’s conversation, the Companions thought of the hereafter more than anyone, and knowing the transience of the world and understanding the Divine wisdom in the hour of the Judgment Day being vague, they assumed a position of always awaiting the world’s appointed hour and worked seriously for the hereafter. Allah’s Noble Messenger (Peace and blessings be upon him) repeating: “Expect the Judgment Day. Wait for it” was prophetic guidance arising from this wisdom, it was not a pronouncement of revelation concerning the specific time of its occurrence and far from the truth. The cause is one thing and the wisdom is another. Thus, sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) of this sort arise from the wisdom in certain things being indefinite.
It is also due to this mystery that they expected the individuals who will come at the end of time like the Mahdi and Sufyan long beforehand, and even in the time of the generation succeeding the Prophet, and hoped to live long enough to see them. Some of the saints, even, said that they had passed. Like the end of the world, Divine wisdom requires that the times of these individuals are not specified either. Because every age is in need of the Mahdi’s meaning, for he strengthens morale and saves the people from despair. Every century has to have a share of this meaning. In order that people should not heedlessly follow evil and the reins of the soul should not be left free in indifference, every century the fearsome individuals who come to lead strife must be shrunk from and feared. If they had been specified, the benefits of general guidance would have been lost.
Now, the difference in the narrations about individuals like the Mahdi, and their meaning, is this: those who expounded Hadiths applied the text of the Hadiths to their own interpretations and commentaries. For example, since the centre of power at that time was Damascus or Medina, they imagined the events connected with the Mahdi and Sufyan in places like Basra, Kufa, and Syria, which were in the region of those centres, and expounded them accordingly. Moreover, they imagined the mighty works belonging to the collective identity or community which those individuals represent to be in their persons and expounded them in that way, so that they ascribed a form to them whereby when those extraordinary individuals appear, everyone will recognize them. However, as we said, this world is the arena of trial. The door is opened to the reason, but the will is not taken from the hand. So, when those individuals, and even the terrible Dajjal, appear, many people and himself even will not know to start with that he is the Dajjal. Those individuals of the end of time will be known through the insight and the light of belief.

(The Words / Twenty-Fourth Word - Third Branch - pp.353-354)

However, the fact that the signs that our Prophet (saas) revealed regarding the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) have taken place one after the other in this (Hijri) century shows that we are living in the End Times, and that it is in this century that the personages of the End Times, and especially Hazrat Mahdi (as), will appear. It is clear from the Master’s explicit declarations and datings that we are living in the End Times.

Our Prophet (saas) reveals in the hadiths that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear in the 1400s, according to the Hijri calendar.
People WILL GATHER AROUND THE MAHDI IN 1400.

(Risalat al-Khuruj al-Mahdi, p. 108)

Statements made in the light of the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) by the great Sunni scholar Suyuti also suggest that Hazrat Mahdi (as), and therefore the other individuals of the End Times who will live at the same time as him, will come in the 1400s, by the Hijri calendar, the time we are living in now. In the original Arabic edition of the work Alkashfu An mujawazati Hazihilumme al Alf ve Alluma fi Ajwibati al'-Asile (Imam Jalaladdin Suyuti, interpretation and commentary: Said Muhammad Lahham, Beirut-Lebanon) Suyuti discusses the hadiths of our Prophet (saas), and he narrates the following two hadiths on page 10 of the book in which the Prophet (saas) says that the life span of the Earth is 7000 years.

Amr ibn Yahya, we informed ibn Zayd about the existence. May Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allah (saas) said: THE LIFE SPAN OF THE WORLD IS SEVEN DAYS IN THE AFTERLIFE DAYS. Almighty Allah said that a day in the sight of the Lord is like a thousand of your years.

At-Tabarani Alkabiyr says: We told Ahmad ibn Annadril Askari and Jafar Ibn Muhammad al-Aryani (or Uryani) and they both said; We told Alvaliyd Ibn Abdul Malik Ibn Sarhul Sahrani and we told Sulayman ibn Ataulqureyshilharbi, and Addehaak Ibn Zamlil Jahni said of Amr Ibn Abi Shajeati Ibn Rabiil Jahni and Sullamatu Ibn Abdillahil Jahni:
I had a dream and told it to Messenger of Allah (saas). He spoke the words inside him: O Messenger of Allah, I am with you on a seven-stepped pulpit, and you are on its highest degree. He (saas) said: As for the seven-stepped pulpit, I am on the highest step, THE LIFE OF THE WORLD IS SEVEN THOUSAND YEARS...

(Suyuti, Al-kashf `an (fi) mujawazat hadihi l-umma al-alf, al-hawi lil Fatawi, p. 10)

In one hadith cited by many Islamic scholars, such as Ahmad Ibn al-Hanbal, the founder of the Hanbali school, our Prophet (saas) provides important information about the history of man by saying that 5600 of the life span of the Earth has already passed:

They narrated from Daqqaq Ibn Zaid Al-Juhani:

I told the Messenger of Allah (saas) of a dream I had had. In that dream the Messenger of Allah (saas) was at the top step of a seven-stepped pulpit. He said: THE SEVEN-STEPPED PULPIT YOU SEE IS THE SEVEN THOUSAND YEARS OF AGE OF THIS WORLD.

(Al-Burhan fi 'Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, p. 89

The great Sunni scholar Barzanji says that, by Allah’s leave, the Day of Reckoning is expected to take place in the 1500s by the Hijri calendar. (Allah knows the truth.)
THE LIFE OF THIS COMMUNITY WILL EXCEED 1,000 YEARS, YET BE LIMITED TO 1,500 YEARS....
(Muhammad ibn `Abd ar-Rasul Barzanji, Al-Isha`ah li Ashrat as-Sa`ah, The Portents of the Judgment Day, p. 299)

On the basis of the hadith handed down from our Prophet (saas), Suyuti makes the following statement:

THE LIFE OF MY COMMUNITY WILL NOT EXCEED 1,500 YEARS.

(Suyuti, al-Kasfu an Mujawazati Hazihil Ummah al-Alfu, al-hawi lil Fatawi, Suyuti. 2/248, Tafsir Ruh-ul Bayan. Bursawi 4/262, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Kitab al-Ilal, p. 89)

On the basis of the hadiths in question and the analyses made in the light thereof by Sunni scholars, it is clear that the life of the Ummah of Islam after our Prophet (saas) will come to an end between 1400 and 1500, by the Hijri calendar.
Master Bediüzzaman Said Nursi states, in the light of all this analysis, in his Sikke-i Tasdik-i Gaybi (The Ratifying Stamp of the Unseen):
"... The first sentence refers to the last period of a community striving on the path of Allah in the End Times in ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED - (1500) and the second sentence to the victory of the struggle (waged on the path of Allah) in ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDED AND SIX (1506). (...)It suggests it will continue in a visible and manifest, and perhaps victorious form, until this date (1506)."

(The Ratifying Stamp of the Unseen, p. 46)

This statement by Bediüzzaman is extremely important because it fully corroborates the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) and the analyses made by earlier Sunni scholars on the basis of the hadiths. With this statement by the Master, Suyuti’s comment that the life of the Ummah of Islam will not extend much past the 1500s becomes much clearer. Because, like Suyuti, the Master says that the Islamic Ummah, and therefore Islamic moral values, will be victorious over the world until around 1506, by the Hijri calendar. In his Kastamonu Addendum, the Master states that the Day of Reckoning may be expected as of the 1500s (Hijri 1545, 2120 AD), and that statement is a second piece of evidence corroborating the above accounts:

“A group from my community will remain in truth until Allah’s command.”
The abjad calculation of the clause “A group from my community...” which is 1542 (2117) implies its (the community’s) time of survival. The abjad calculation of the clause “will remain in truth” (when the gemination mark is counted) gives 1506 (2082); it indicates until that date (2082) it will continue its work of enlightenment evidently and obviously, and maybe victoriously; then until 1542 (2117) in secrecy and defeat. The abjad calculation of the clause “until Allah’s command” (when the gemination mark is counted) suggests that THE JUDGMENT DAY WILL BEFALL the unbeliever in 1545 (2120).

(Kastamonu Addendum, p. 33)

Reflecting on these hadiths, it appears we are told that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear immediately prior to the Day of Reckoning. As we have seen, it is clear both from the hadiths revealed by Allah to our Prophet (saas) and from the statements made by Sunni scholars that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear in the century 1400-1500 by the Hijri calendar. Master Said Nursi declared several times that Hazrat Mahdi (as) would appear 1 century after his own, in other words in the 1400s:
... SUPPOSE A FACT THAT WOULD OCCUR ONE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED YEARS LATER TO BE CLOSE TO THEIR CENTURY.... (The Words / Twenty-Fourth Word - Third Branch - p.353)

It now occurs to mind that if each of the letters "mim" and "lam" bearing the gemination mark are counted as two, THE PEOPLE WHO WILL DISPERSE OPPRESSION A CENTURY LATER FROM NOW, CAN BE THE DISCIPLES OF HAZRAT MAHDI (AS). (Rays, 1st Ray, p. 605) (The Ratifying Stamp of the Unseen, p. 90)

“…In this period there are such unusually prevalent movements that take everything into its own account, even if THAT PERSON TRULY AWAITED AND EXPECTED TO COME AFTER A CENTURY came at this time ... (Kastamonu Addendum, p. 57)

UNTIL THE TRUE LORDS OF THE BROAD SPHERE OF LIFE, THE MAHDI AND HIS STUDENTS COME IN THE END TIMES, BY ALMIGHTY ALLAH’S LEAVE, AND BROADEN THAT SPHERE AND CAUSE THOSE SEEDS TO FLOURISH... (Kastamonu Addendum, p. 72)

I BELIEVE I AM A SERVANT OF THIS WONDROUS PERSON WHO WıLL APPEAR IN THE FUTURE, A REAR-GUARD TO SET A BACKGROUND FOR HIM, AND A PIONEERING SOLDIER OF THAT GREAT COMMANDER. (Barla Addendum, p. 162)

It appears from this truth that; THIS BLESSED PERSON WHO WILL COME LATER WILL DISSEMINATE AND IMPLEMENT THE RISALE-I NUR AS A PROGRAM … (The Ratifying Stamp of the Unseen, p. 9)

Imam Rabbani’s statement in the 381st letter is also highly important evidence regarding the TIMING of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as):

... THAT IS BECAUSE HIS APPEARANCE WILL BE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY....

(Imam Rabbani, The Letters, Letter 381, p. 1184)

Imam Rabbani stated that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) coming would take place at the start of the century. This statement by Rabbani has to be interpreted together with statements by our Prophet (saas) to the effect that the life of this world is 7000 years, of which 5600 had gone by up to his own day, and that the life of the Ummah of Islam would not much exceed 1500 years, and this again leads us to a date of the beginning of the 1400s by the Hijri calendar. Because since the life of the Ummah of Islam will come to an end in 1500, then the only century that Hazrat Mahdi (as) can appear at the beginning of is the 1400s. Since Hazrat Mahdi’s disappearance, his struggle against slanders, plots and pressure from those people made uneasy by the spread of the moral values of the religion and who want to put an end to those activities of his, his struggle against irreligious movements such as Darwinism, materialism and atheism and his complete intellectual neutralization of them, his valuable work in being instrumental in people coming to have faith and the moral values of Islam coming to rule the world as a consequence, his building of the Turkish-Islamic Union, and forging an alliance with the people of the Book will all take a long time, it is clear that his coming will take place at the beginnings of the 1400s, by the Hijri calendar.
Imam Rabbani also reveals that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come 1000 (one thousand) years after the death of our Prophet (saas) and that he will come “in between 1000 and 2000 years:”
However, what is anticipated is this; the renewal of this concealed state AFTER ONE THOUSAND YEARS HAVE PASSED. His being given superiority, finding water and increase... The original of such virtues (perfections) will appear and cover its abasement… AND LET HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) who values devotion to might COME. May Allah be pleased with him.

(Letters of Rabbani, 1/569)

The strengthening of the Qur'anic law, the renovation of people takes place in this SECOND THOUSAND. The just witnesses of the truthfulness of this cause are the existence of the Prophet 'Isa (as) and the MAHDI IN THIS THOUSAND.

(Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, vol. 1, p. 611)

Those among the nation of Allah's Messenger (saas) are highly perfected in faith. It does not matter whether they are few in number after the passing of one thousand years of the Messenger of Allah's (saas) death. THE COMING OF THE MAHDI AFTER 1,000 YEARS SERVES THIS PURPOSE. Our Prophet (saas), the last Messenger, gave the glad tidings of his holy coming. The Prophet 'Isa (as), on the other hand, will come after 1,000 years.

(Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, vol. 1, p. 440)

One thousand years after the death of our Prophet (saas) we enter a second millennium. According to Imam Rabbani’s accounts above, it is clear that the Prophet Jesus and Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear between these 1000 and 2000 years. (Allah knows the truth.)
In addition, the signs of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) taking place one after the other is another very important proof of the time of his coming. The fact that the portents of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) revealed by the Prophet began with the attack on the Kaaba on 1 Muharram 1400, the first day of 1400 (Hijri), and that the other signs began taking place one after the other before and after that proves that the century we are living in is the century of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and the other personages of the End Times. (Allah knows the truth.)
In the light of all these proofs and analyses, one fact emerges very clearly, which is that the claim made by certain brothers of the Nur, that “Only the qualities of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and the other personages of the End Times have been revealed, and no information is provided about the timing of their coming” in no way reflects the truth, and is obviously mistaken and misleading.

2. THE CLAIM THAT OUR PROPHET (SAAS) DID NOT RELATE THE NAME OF HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS ERRONEOUS

Our brothers of the Nur who make this claim say that the fact that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name has not been revealed is a sign that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come as a collective personality. But they express this idea only very indirectly. By saying that Allah has not revealed Hazrat Mahdi’s name and the time of his coming in order to keep Muslims in a state of expectation they are in fact trying to suggest there is not such person at all. But these claims are definitely untrue. In several hadiths our Prophet (saas) says that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be someone from his own ahl al-bayt, descended from his own line, one of his own children, and that he will resemble him in character, but that physically Hazrat Mahdi (as) will resemble the People of Israel in having a powerful and majestic appearance. He says he will have the mark of the prophethood on his back and another mole in the mark of a myrtle leaf, that his teeth will be as white and bright as pearls, that there will be a furrow between his eyebrows, that his thighs will be broad, that he will be majestic, that there will be a slightly concave mark on his forehead, that his hair will be thick and his nose small, along with hundreds of physical characteristics, and that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear in the 1400s as an individual, not as a collective personality. In addition, he says that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name will be compatible with his, and his father’s name compatible with his father’s, in other words, they will resemble one another.

According to Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi’s accounts from Ibn Masud, Rasulullah (saas) said: “His name will be compatible with mine, and his father’s name with my father’s name...” [1]

“Even if only one day is left to the life of this world, Allah will certainly prolong that day until the coming of a man [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] from the Ahl al-Bayt whose name is compatible with mine.” –narrated in Ahmad Ibn Hanbal’s Musnad.

According to Abdullah Ibn Umar’s (ra) account;
Rasulullah (saas) said: “The world will not come to an end until a man from my Ahl al-Bayt [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] whose name is compatible with mine imposes his rule over all the Arabs.”

According to another account, he said:
“Even if only one day remains from the life of this world, Allah will certainly prolong that day until He sends a man from my Ahl al-Bayt [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] whose name is compatible with mine. He will fill the world that was previously filled with cruelty and oppression with truth and justice instead.” –related by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Bayhaqi and Abu Amr Ad-Dani.

Again according to Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra) he said:
“The world will not come to an end until a man from my Ahl al-Bayt whose name is compatible with mine establishes dominion (on earth). He will fill the world that was previously filled with cruelty and oppression, with truth and justice instead.” – Related in Abu al-Qasim Sulaiman ibn Ahmad ibn At-Tabarani “al- Mu’jam As-Saghir.” In addition, Tirmidhi’s “Al-Jami” and Abu Dawud’s “Sunan” by and large repeat this account, with a few minor alterations.

These statements by our Prophet (saas) concerning Hazrat Mahdi (as) are extremely informative. Since however, as a result of our testing in this world, a period of time has to pass in order for something to become completely clear, it is impossible for us at the moment to know what our Prophet (saas) is referring to. But this information is fully established in the Sight of Allah. But since we are subject to Allah’s destiny we will be unable to learn this name until the time has come. But when the time does come, Allah will bring forth the wisdom in these hadiths, and people will see just how clearly Allah has revealed the name of Hazrat Mahdi (as) in these hadiths.

The time of the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) was very striving, Hazrat Mahdi (pbuh) will pave the way for him when he comes again

The Judgment Day is close after Rasulullah (saas)

The Judgment Day is close after Rasulullah (saas)

Rasulullah (saas) said: “I was sent at the same hour appointed for the Day of Judgment. But, just like this passing that, I came not long ago passing the hour appointed for the Day of Judgment!” and showed His middle finger and index finger. [(Al-Kutub as-Sittah, narrated by Mustawrid Ibn Saddad al-Fihri, hadith no 5026) Tirmidhi, Fitan 39, (2214).] [50]

Rasulullah (saas) said: “I was sent even though the Day of Judgment is so close!” and showed his index finger and middle finder. (Al-Kutub as-Sittah, narrated by Sehl Ibn Sa’d, hadith no 5025) [Bukhari, Rikak 39, Commentary, Nâziat 1, Talak 25; Muslim, Fitan 132, (2950).] [49]

I went down to Abdullah Ibn Havala al-Azdi (ra). He told me: “Rasulullah (saas) sent us on foot so that we can get prizes. We turned back but could not get any prize. He understood our fatigue from our faces, straightened up and said: “Oh my Lord, don’t depute me to them; I’m unable to assume responsibility for them! Don’t depute them to themselves; they are also unable to do that! Don’t depute them to other people; they would prefer themselves over them!” Then he put his hand over my head and said: “Oh Ibn Havala! If you see that caliphate goes from Medina to Syria, then you will know that earthquakes, sorrow and big events are close. On that day, the Day of Judgment is closer to people than my hand is close to your head.”
(Al-Kutub as-Sittah, narrated by Ibnu Zugb al-Ayadi)

The Hour [Last Day] will not be established until ... earthquakes will be very frequent.
(Ramuz al-Ahadith, 476/11)

There are two great events before the Day of Judgment ... and then years of earthquakes.
(Ramuz al-Ahadith, 187/2)

The Day of Judgment will not take place until these things come to pass… Death and slaughter will be widespread…
(al-Suyuti, Jamius Sagir, 3:211; Musnad, 2:492, 4:391, 392)

The Hour will not take place before time shrinks. One year will be like a month, one month will be like a week, a week will be like a day, and a day will be like an hour; and an hour will be like a burning flame.
(Ibn Ahmad Hanbal, Musnad)

Our Prophet (saas) told that 55th verse of Surat an-Nur points at the domination of moral values of Islam over the world with the hand of Hazrat Mahdi

Our Prophet (saas) told that 55th verse of Surat an-Nur points at the domination of moral values of Islam over the world with the hand of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

Allah has promised those of you who believe and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors, and will firmly establish for them their religion with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security. “They worship Me, not associating anything with Me. Any who are unbelievers after that, such people are deviators.”
(Surat an-Nur, 55)

It was narrated by Ayyasi through Ali ibn Hassan: This verse was read alongside him: Swear by Allah that they are those who love our Ahl al-Bayt. ALLAH WILL MAKE THEM DO (THIS) BY THE HAND OF A MAN FROM US. THAT MAN IS THE MAHDI OF THIS UMMAH.

Majmau’l bayan fi tafsiri’l-Kuran Abu Ali Eminuddin Fazl, Hasan b. Fazl Tabersi 1986, v: 4, p. 832

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will not know Arabic

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will not know Arabic

As a matter of fact Tirmidhi said the following about Hazrat Mahdi (as) in his book called Khatm al-Awliya (Seal of Saints):
“Just as the last of the Prophets, Muhammad (saas) was given the "seal of prophecy" (Khatam an-Nubuwwa) and he is a deed of Almighty Allah over all Prophets, this guardian [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] who is the last of the guardians will be so in the End Times.”

Muhyiddin ibn Arabi his book called al-Jawab al-Mustaqim (The Straightforward Answer) written to answer the questions asked by Tirmidhi in his book of Khatm al-Awliya:
“He [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] is someone who acquires the truth and closely resembles his forefather [Muhammad (saas)]. HE DOES NOT SPEAK ARABIC VERY WELL, but he is no different to him in moral terms. HE WILL BE OF MEDIUM HEIGHT. THE AGE OF PROPERTY WILL COME TO AN END WITH HIM, AND SOVEREIGNTY WILL END WITH HIM. He [Hazrat Mahdi (as)]will have a helper called “Alive”. His essence is spiritual, his appearance is humane.

Omar Ibn Zahir relates:
"Someone asked Imam Jaffar Sadiq, "Can we address the Qaim [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] as Commander of the Faithful? The imam replied; "No, Almighty Allah has given that title to the Hazrat Ali (as) alone, and nobody after him can be known by that name." The man then asked, "HOW CAN WE GREET HIM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)]?" HE ANSWERED: "GREETINGS TO YOU O BAQIYATULLAH."

Sincere Muslims will love and appreciate Hazrat Mahdi (as) and his students in time

Sincere Muslims will love and appreciate Hazrat Mahdi (as) and his students in time

... Hazrat Prophet... said this: Jibril (as) told me that, my Ahl Al-Bayt [my Descendants] will be opressed after me. This opression will last until Hazrat Mahdi (as) who is one of them will appear, UNTIL THEIR [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) AND HIS STUDENTS)] GLORY IS EXALTED AND MUSLIM COMMUNITY WILL UNITE IN LOVING THEM. IN THAT TIME, THOSE WHO REVILE AGAINST THEM WILL DECREASE, THOSE WHO DO NOT LOVE THEM WILL BE DENIGRATED AND THOSE WHO PRAISE THEM WILL INCREASE.

(The Pioneers of Guidance, Prophet Muhammed Mustafa, 1. Volume, p. 314)

In the End Times; before the emergence of Hazrat Mahdi (as), Muslims will be subjected to severe oppression, violence and suffering. However people will understand that Hazrat Mahdi (as) has come by the successive manifestation of the portents of the End Times. In this period, the names of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and his students who are devoted to Allah with sincere faith will begin to be mentioned a lot. Their reputation will spread all around the world. Then Islamic community will slowly begin to unite in loving Hazrat Mahdi (as) and his students. But until then cruelty, oppression and maltreatment against Hazrat Mahdi (as) and his students will continue and there will be those who slander Him. However in time the number of these people will decrease – except for those who repent and change their intentions – and these people will fall into a despicable and inferior position. The number of people who love and praise Hazrat Mahdi (as) will greatly increase in time.

Hazrat Mahdi (as)'s whole body will be wide.

Hazrat Mahdi (as)'s whole body will be wide.

From Yahya ibn Nufal, indeed Musa ibn Jafar (as) raises his hands and supplicates after afternoon prayer, I inquire from him saying, to whom did you offer prayer for? He said: to Al-Mahdi among the family of Muhammad (saas) and said: HE IS HAVING WIDE STOMACH, HIS LEGS ARE VERY ENERGETIC, HIS SHOULDERS ARE WIDE…HIS NIGHT SHALL GUARD THE STARS BY HIS BOWING DOWN AND PROSTRATION TO ALLAH, HE WHOM THE BLAMES OF THOSE THAT BLAME SHALL NOT AFFECT HIM BEFORE ALLAH, HE IS THE LUMINOUS LAMP, HE SHALL RISE WITH THE COMMAND OF ALLAH.

(Bihar al-Anwar : 86-81)

Abu Ja’far, through the forefathers of Imam Muhammad Baqir, narrated from the Amirul Muminun, the leader of the Ahl al-Bayt, that he said from the pulpit “IN THE END TIMES A MAN FROM MY LINE WOULD RISE… HAVING A CLEAR AND WIDE BELLY AND HIS THIGHS WOULD BE BROAD AND HIS BONES SHALL BE LONG (BIG) AND PROMINENT…”

(The Life of Imam Mahdi (as), Allama Bakir Sharif al-Quraish)

In another hadith, Ali (as) again mentions about Imam Mahdi (as) in the following words: “HE SHALL HAVE A WIDE FOREHEAD… AND A CLEAR AND WIDE BELLY, BROAD THIGHS …”

(Yanabi al-Mawaddah, p. 423)

Among the information delivered by our Prophet (saas) about Hazrat Mahdi (as), who is the Imam of the End Times and owner of the time, the physical features of Hazrat Mahdi (as) are also told in great details. One of these features is the fact that Hazrat Mahdi (as) has a wide stomach and wide shoulders just like our Prophet (saas). In the hadith above it is pointed out that Hazrat Mahdi (as) is broad shouldered and has a wide stomach. Besides it is also understood from the hadith that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) eyebrows are close to one another, that he walks fast, meaning He has a lively and restless creation.

Allah will clear Hazrat Mahdi (as) of slanders pointed at Him

Allah will clear Hazrat Mahdi (as) of slanders pointed at Him

Al-Mahdi [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] who is among the family of Muhammad (saas)… has a wide stomach, his eyebrow are very close, his legs are very energetic, his shoulders are wide… his night shall guard the stars by his bowing down and prostration to Allah, he whom the blames of those that blame him will not affect him before Allah, he is a luminous lamp…

(Bihar al-Anwar: 86-81)

In the hadith, it is mentioned that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be descended from the line of our Prophet (saas). The physical features of Hazrat Mahdi (as) that his having a wide stomach, his eyebrows being not far from but close to one another, Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) legs being very energetic and his shoulders being wide are mentioned in the hadith. In the hadiths, it is pointed out that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will spend his nights by praying and carrying out scholarly activities for the sake of Allah. In addition it is also mentioned that there will be people who unjustly accuse Hazrat Mahdi (as). But inshaAllah Allah will clear Hazrat Mahdi (as) of slanders pointed at him. Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be like a candle casting a heavenly light with his pure Islamic morality, which instantly shines out among the dark features of morality experienced by society in general.

Various characteristics of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

Various characteristics of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

He said: O Commander of the Faithful! From whom does Hazrat Mahdi (as) come? He replied: He is from the Bani Hashim, from the peak of the Arabs’ great mountain. HE IS SUCH AN OCEAN THAT PEOPLE CAN ENDLESSLY GROW IN KNOWLEDGE AND MORALITY IN THIS SPIRITUAL OCEAN. HE IS A MERCY FOR THOSE WHO SHELTER IN HIM...

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 251)

He said: O Commander of the Faithful! From whom does Hazrat Mahdi (as) come? He said: He is from the Bani Hashim, from the peak of the Arab’s great mountain. He is such an ocean that anyone entering it is lost. He is a mercy for those who shelter in him, he is that makes people pure (clean) when they are filled with hate, when death appears he is not afraid, when death comes he is not shaken and he never withdraws from the field of struggle. HE IS EXPERIENCED, VICTORIOUS, INVINCIBLE, A LION, SOUND, THE PILLAR OF HIS PEOPLE, COURAGEOUS, he is the wisdom sword of Allah, the leader, everyone gathers around him, he grew at home as a source of greatness and honor, and his greatness stems from the most noble greatness.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 251)

LET NOTHING PREVENT YOU FROM SWEARING ALLEGIANCE TO HIM (FROM BEING HIS FOLLOWER), those who hinder you are those who always shelter in corruption. If they speak, they speak evil, and if they are silent they are peccable and impious.”

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 252)

The hadith say that there will be those who try to prevent the followers of Hazrat Mahdi (as) from going along with him. It is noted how these people are contrary and given to corruption, how they think of corruption when they speak and when they are silent, how curses pour from them and how they are immoral.

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be very compassionate and affectionate

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be very compassionate and affectionate

With his love, affection and compassion Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be someone whom everyone loves, approves of and is sincerely devoted to. Love, compassion and affection will be so extensive, joy will be so widespread, wealth will so increase and there will be such peace and calm that "In his day, the old will say ‘I wish I was young’ and the young will say ‘I wish I was older’."[1] Through Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) love, compassion, moral virtue and profound faith, his time will be one when "the goodness of good people increases, and even the wicked are treated well."[2]

In the hadith our Prophet (saas) describes how Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be full of love and affection and will gather everyone around him with great love and fervor, how not just other people but even the fish in the sea and the birds in the air will be content with him, and how he will be a source of joy for all.

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL BE SO COMPASSIONATE THAT no one will be woken up from their sleep or have a bleeding nose.

(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 42)

Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) services will be so significant and very great that IT IS SAID THAT NOT JUST OTHER PEOPLE, BUT ALL THE DWELLERS IN THE EARTH AND SKY WILL BE CONTENT WITH HIM.

(Ish'afu'r-Ragibin, p.146; al-Hawi, 2:66, 67)

HIS COMING WILL BE A SOURCE OF JOY, NOT JUST FOR BELIEVERS, BUT FOR ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE EARTH AND SKY. So much so that even birds, wild animals and the fish in the sea will rejoice.

(Portents of Doomsday, pp. 162, 163)

PEOPLE WILL SEEK REFUGE IN HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) AS HONEY BEES CLUSTER AROUND THEIR SOVEREIGN. He will fill the world that was once full of cruelty, with justice. His justice will be as such that he will not wake a sleeping person or even shed one drop of blood. The Earth will return to the age of happiness.

(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p.29)

[Hazrat Mahdi (as)] will follow the way of the Prophet. He will not wake up a sleeping person or shed blood.... The world with be filled with justice instead of oppression and torture. He [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] will distribute all things with equal measures of truth and justice. THUS IN THE SAME WAY THAT THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH AND SKY BE PLEASED WITH HIM, SO THE BIRDS IN THE AIR, SAVAGE ANIMALS IN THE FORESTS AND EVEN FISH IN THE SEA WILL BE DELIGHTED WITH HIM.

(Al-Barzanji, Pamuk Publishing, Istanbul, 2002, p. 163)

[In the age of Hazrat Mahdi (as)] The sheep will graze with the wolf” and “children will play with snakes and scorpions but will come to no harm.” One will sow a handful of seed and reap 700 handfuls...

(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 43)

Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) love, affection and compassion will be instrumental in people treating one another with love, affection and compassion. This is revealed as follows:

In the time of Hazrat Mahdi (as), as in the Age of Felicity, WITHERED EMOTIONS WILL FLOURISH AND FLOWER AGAIN.

(Al-Hawi al-Fatawa, p. 67, 68; Rahbavi, Portents of Doomsday, p. 162, 163)

BY ALLAH’S LEAVE, HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL BE ABLE TO SOFTEN HEARTS THAT HAVE BECOME HARDENED, MAKE DIAMONDS OUT OF SOULS THAT ARE LIKE COAL and resurrect the dead with the radiance of his faith...

(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 24; Saban Dogen, The Mahdi and the Dajjal, pp. 194-195)

These hadith tell us that before Hazrat Mahdi (as), people will lack love and compassion that some people’s hearts will be hardened and some people will lack depth and that beauty of soul will decline, but with the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as), virtues such as love, compassion, affection and warmth will again come to life in people’s souls.

Our Prophet (saas) only knew Arabic. Allah also bestowed on him innate knowledge and the knowledge of divine things. Hazrat Mahdi (as), who will appear in 1400 according to the Islamic calendar and who will be the greatest mujaddid (restorer of the faith), saint and final guide of the End Times, will receive no madrassa training, either, and will possess only innate knowledge and the knowledge of divine things. Allah will purify Hazrat Mahdi (as) in a single night, meaning that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come into possession of very profound knowledge in the course of a single night. Our Prophet (saas) tells us that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be enlightened with such special knowledge in the words:

The Mahdi and his helpers

The Mahdi and his helpers

Our Prophet (saas) has told us that the Mahdi will serve for the benefit of Islam and Muslims and will carry out many important activities. According to the information provided in the hadiths, the Mahdi, who resembles our Prophet (saas) in terms of his moral values, will engage in sincere efforts for people’s salvation in this world and in the Hereafter, and by means of him there will be comfort, peace and abundance in the world. It is also reported that he will have a small number of helpers in this honorable and superior duty. The information provided regarding the Mahdi’s helpers in the hadiths and in the expressions of Islamic scholars are the signs that will enable him to be recognized.

The 1400s (Hijri) in which we are living is a time when the portents of the end times reported in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) and in the works of Islamic scholars are becoming true one by one. We are informed that great and historic events will take place in this period. Allah has chosen blessed people to conduce to those developments. The superior moral values and honorable struggle of the Mahdi, is described detailed in the hadiths. Another thing we are informed about is the Mahdi’s helpers and their various features. One of the most striking features is their numbers. According to the hadiths, the numbers of his helpers, who will be active on a global scale, will remain the same and won’t change during their transmission. This is a miraculous state of affairs created by Allah in His wisdom. The numbers of the Mahdi’s helpers are going to be the cause of his recognition.

When the Mahdi Appears His Helpers Will Be Few

As revealed by our Prophet (saas) in the hadiths, the number of the people who support him when he first appears will be very few as a requirement of the law of Allah revealed in the Qur’an. This has been same in all the communities of believers who lived throughout the history. The Qur’an also contains information about the fewness of sincere believers around the prophets.

For example, only few young people constituting the community in which the Prophet Musa (as) lived, believed in him:

“No one believed in Musa except for a few of his people out of fear that Pharaoh, and the elders, would persecute them. Pharaoh was high and mighty in the land. He was one of the profligate.” (Surah Yunus: 83)

The same thing is valid for the helpers in the period when Prophet ‘Isa (as) first appeared. It is understood that noone has believed in him except few Disciples The Disciples believed in Prophet (as) is revealed as follows in the Qur’an:

“You who believe! Be helpers of Allah as ‘Isa son of Maryam said to the Disciples, ‘Who will be my helpers to Allah?’ The Disciples said, ‘We will be the helpers of Allah.’ One faction of the tribe of Israel believed and the other disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy and they became victorious.” (Surah As-Saf: 14)

The Qur’an also tells us that the Companions of the Cave were very few in number:

“They will say, ‘There were three of them, their dog being the fourth.’ They will say, ‘There were five of them, their dog being the sixth,’ guessing at the Unseen. And they will say, ‘There were seven of them, their dog being the eighth.’ Say: ‘My Lord knows best their number. Those who know about them are very few.’ So do not enter into any argument concerning them, except in relation to what is clearly known. And do not seek the opinion of any of them regarding them.” (Surat Al-Kahf: 22)

In another verse we are told that the number of people following Prophet Nuh (as) was also few:

“…But those who believed with him were only few.” (Surah Hud: 40)

It is also reported in the Qur’an that very few people believed in Prophet Lut (as). When the People of Lut (as) were struck by a great disaster, apart from his non-believing wife, Allah rescued only the believer members of Prophet Lut’s (as) family:

“…We are going to rescue him and his family–except for his wife. She will be one of those who stay behind. When Our Messengers came to Lut, he was distressed on their account, feeling incapable of protecting them. They said, ‘Do not fear and do not grieve. We are going to rescue you and your family–except for your wife; she will be one of those who stay behind.” (Surat Al-‘Ankabut: 32-33)

The Number of the Mahdi’s Helpers Will be Around 300

A specific number is cited in the hadiths for the number of people who will follow the Mahdi:

These 313 are devout believers by night and heroes by day. (Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib fi Bayan Anna'l Mahdi min Awladi Ali b. Abu Talib Ale't-Tamam ve'l Qamal)

They consist of a group, including women, of 314 people. They will overcome all tyrants. Their hearts are like iron, and they are lions by day and devout believers by night. Neither those before nor after them can match them in self-sacrifice. (Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib fi Bayan Anna'l Mahdi min Awladi Ali b. Abu Talib Ale't-Tamam ve'l Qamal)

Three hundred and fourteen people, among them women, will appear before the Mahdi. (Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib fi Bayan Anna'l Mahdi min Awladi Ali b. Abu Talib Ale't-Tamam ve'l Qamal)

It is striking that the number of people believing in this valuable person who serves for the religion and calls people to believe in Allah, are few. There is no doubt that this is a miraculous state of affairs. The Mahdi, who will prevail the moral values of the Qur’an, will have only 313-314 helpers, when even the smallest religious communities today have thousands of members, is one of the main distinguishing features of the Mahdi and his community.

Bediüzzaman Said Nursi also recalled in his writings that although their numbers will be few every member of the community of the Mahdi would be spiritually very powerful:

It was related from Muhammed b. Hanefi that: Their numbers will be those of the people of Badr (313). In the same way that those before them cannot match them, neither can those who come after. Their number is as many as those who crossed the river with Talut. (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

The force and spiritual army this duty depends on is some students in full possession of titles of loyalty and solidarity. No matter how few they may be, they are as powerful and valuable as a literal army. (Emirdag Addendum, p. 259)

Angels Will Also Assist the Mahdi

Allah will support him with three thousand angels. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar)

Jibril will be before them, and Mikail behind.

... .( Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar)

It is reported in the hadith that Jibril and Mikail will be among the Mahdi’s helpers. According to this information, by Allah’s will, angels are also going to help the Mahdi.

The angels’ help to true believers is reported in various verses of the Qur’an. Our Lord also supported our Prophet (saas) and his companions with angels. Some verses on the subject are as follows:

“And when your Lord revealed to the angels, ‘I am with you so make those who believe firm…” (Surat Al-Anfal: 12)

“And when you said to the believers, ‘Is it not enough for you that your Lord reinforced you with three thousand angels, sent down?’” (Surah Al ‘Imran: 124)

Every Believer Living in the End Times Is Very Valuable

Another noteworthy subject in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) is that every believer in the end times will be very valuable. In the end times, when atheism is widespread all over the world and when moral degeneration is proceeding at a great pace, believers, and especially the Mahdi, will encounter great difficulties and social pressure. This is reported in one of the hadiths as follows:

Such a time will come that he who is patient before the religion will be like one holding a glowing ember. (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

To serve with this worthy person who is patient in the face of such pressure, people need to compete with one another to be his helpmates in great excitement and enthusiasm. However, during the end times, truth and falsehood will change place in practice. The people who have left the moral values of the Qur’an and the moral degeneration’s enormous dimension may prevent people from following such an honorable believer and joining his community.

The Mahdi’s Helpers in Various Islamic Sources

They are young

The standard-bearer of the Mahdi will be a young person, fair colored, with light beard.” (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar, p. 51)

His (the Mahdi’s) standard-bearer will be a young person belonging to the line of Temimi from the East. ((Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar, p. 26)

They will be supported spiritually

Know that when the Mahdi appears all those with great knowledge and fear of Allah and the people in general will rejoice. They will be divine, in other words spiritually supported man of the Mahdi. They will preserve his call, assist him, and reunite him to the victory. They will assume all heavy burdens belonging to the nation. They will support the Mahdi beyond the duty entrusted to him by Allah.” (M. Arabi) (Hayrettin Gumusel, The Awaited Mahdi, p. 37, Kopru Publishing)

They will have a protector who is not one of their kind. This has never opposed Allah. He will be one of the purest and most honest ministers.” (M. Arabi) (Hayrettin Gumusel, The Awaited Mahdi, p. 37, Kopru Publishing)

It is related from Muawiya b. Qurra that:

A group from his community will be helped until the Resurrection day. (Ramuz al-Ahadith, 472)

They have superior moral values

It is certain they are banners of the true path. (Ramuz al-Ahadith, 1/135)

They are people of Islam who fear no condemnation from any critics nor any malicious tales on the path of Allah. (Sunan Ibn Majah,10-259)

It is related from the blessed Ali that:

“…they are people who truly know Allah, and they will be the Mahdi’s helpers in the end times.” (Abu Naim Al Qufi)

By Allah’s will they are not going to be defeated

One of the distinct qualities of these ministers is that they will never be defeated.” (M. Arabi) (Hayrettin Gumusel, The Awaited Mahdi, p. 37, Kopru Publishing)

According to Nuaym, related from Abu Jaffar:

His (the Mahdi’s) commanders are the most auspicious of people.” (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar, p. 49)

They feel no sorrow for those who leave, nor joy for those who join them

It is related from Muawiya b. Qurra that:

Neither will the desertion of those who abandon them will do them no harm. (Ramuz al-Ahadith, 472)

It is related from Muhammad bin Hanafi that:

…As the clouds gather around the skies, so Allah will gather a community around him. He reconciles their hearts. They do not grieve for the martyred nor rejoice for who join them. Their number will be as many as the People of Badr (313). In the same way that those before them can not equal them, neither can those who come after and their number is as many as those who crossed the river with Talut (Book of sayings on the portents of the Mahdi of the End Times-57)

Allah has concealed them

Allah has appointed a group to them as viziers. Allah has concealed these individuals. (Hayrettin Gumusel, The Awaited Mahdi, M. Arabi p. 36, Kopru Publishing)

Allah creates a community for the Mahdi. They are concealed by Allah. (Prophecies of the Mahdi. p. 129)

They will be true to their word

They will act in the vanguard like leaders… In the same way that leading believers kept their word to Allah, so they will confirm their words. (M. Arabi) (Hayrettin Gumusel, The Awaited Mahdi, p. 37, Kopru Publishing)

In his commentary, Ibn Marduya relates a hadith from Ibn Abbas: He stated that:

The Companions of the Cave will be the Mahdi’s helpmates.” (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman)

In his commentary on the Qur’an, Imam Abu Ishaq Salam states that:

When the Mahdi appears he will go to the Companions of the Cave and greet them, and Allah will resurrect them and they will take their places at the Mahdi’s side. Afterwards, they will return to the place where they lie and not rise again until the day of Resurrection. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman)

Imam Suyuti states:

The slumber of the Ashab al-Kahf is a grant them by Allah. Because they will be the Mahdi’s helpers and will have the honor of being included in the community of Muhammed (saas). (Hadiths from the commentary by Jalaladdin Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 59)

The Mahdi’s Helpers in Various Islamic Sources

As revealed by our Prophet (saas) 1400 years ago, the Mahdi, one of the chosen servants of Allah, by the will of Allah, will prevail the moral values of the Qur’an to all over the world. He will fulfill that duty as written in his destiny, even if he has to do it alone. It is a mercy and blessing from Almighty Allah to be supported by helpers during the period of his transmission. Our Lord’s support for His emissaries is revealed in the Qur’an as follows:

“If you do not help him, Allah did help him...” (Surah At-Tawba: 40)

The Ashab al-Kahf Will Join the Mahdi’s Helpers

According to the blessed Huzayfa:

The Prophet (saas) stated: “My community will not be raised before the Mahdi appears. Allah will support him with three thousand angels… The Ashab al-Kahf will be with him and be his helpers.”

They Will Pray by Night and Work by Day

Abu Nuaym related from Abu Jaffar:

“Upon this call, 313 people, as many as the People of Badr, who were not previously allied together will immediately appear, and worship by night and act as lions by day (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

CONCLUSION

The Mahdi will be a holy individual, whose moral values, physical features, activities, services and effect on the world were described by our Prophet (saas) 1400 years ago, and which are written in his own destiny. Those features cannot be imitated, nor acquired by effort, so, by the will of Allah, the Mahdi’s work cannot be prevented or rejected by any kind of pretext. By Allah’s will The Mahdi will serve, together with Prophet ‘Isa who will return back to Earth for the second time in the end times to prevail the moral values of the Qur’an to all over the world as reported by our Prophet (saas). This is a destiny determined by Allah. The domination of the moral values of Islam is described in the Qur’an as follows:

It is He Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth to exalt it over every other religion, though the idolaters hate it. (Surat As-Saff: 9)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be recognized by his powerful faith, grandeur, dignity, noble behavior and the descriptions given by our Prophet (saas)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be recognized by his powerful faith, grandeur, dignity, noble behavior and the descriptions given by our Prophet (saas)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be recognized by his faith, nobility, gravity, dignity, noble behavior and excellent moral values, by the fact he accepts gifts from none but rather gives them away, that he preaches Islam without demanding any fee from anyone, by the fact he expects no reward for his Qur’anic service and the way that everything he does benefits İslam. Muslims everywhere will speak of these virtues of his, described by the Prophet (saas), and this will represent further evidence enabling Hazrat Mahdi (as) to be recognized.

… Abu’l Jarud says:
When I asked Imam Muhammad Baqr, “... HOW WILL THE IMAM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] BE KNOWN?” he replied:
“BY HIS SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE AND GRANDEUR AND BY THE GREAT MUHAMMAD’S REPETITION OF HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)] VIRTUES.”

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 284)

Mugaira Nasr says: When I asked Imam Jaffr Sadiq, “HOW WILL THE IMAM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] BE RECOGNIZED?” he replied:
BY HIS GRANDEUR AND DIGNITY.
BY WHAT ELSE WILL HE BE RECOGNIZED? ALSO BY WHAT IS LAWFUL AND UNLAWFUL, BY THE PEOPLE’S NEED OF HIM AND BY HIS OWN NEED OF NOBODY...

The holy appearance that will identify Hazrat Mahdi (as) to people

The holy appearance that will identify Hazrat Mahdi (as) to people

For hundreds of years now, the Islamic world has been awaiting for Hazrat Mahdi (as), who will be instrumental in people attaining salvation, restore the moral values of Islam and unite Muslims by dispersing the darkness over the Muslim world. Our Prophet (saas) has imparted the glad tidings of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) to the whole Muslim world through the hadiths. And he has described a great many highly significant phenomena that are portents of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as). And just about all of these have come about, one after the other, over the last few years. Muslims are now preparing to welcome this holy person they have been awaiting for the last 1,400 years.

According to the hadiths, the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) will take place in this century. The whole Muslim world is experiencing the excitement of these great tidings, awaited for centuries, becoming a reality and of Hazrat Mahdi (as) appearing in our own day.

People still do not recognize Hazrat Mahdi (as) by that title. But Hazrat Mahdi (as) is active now. And again according to the hadiths, the Islamic world will have the honor of becoming personally acquainted with Hazrat Mahdi (as) within the next few decades.

The century we are living in is that of Hazrat Mahdi (as). All Muslims are enjoying the excitement of the coming of Hazrat Mahdi (as) being so imminent.

The hadiths of our Prophet (saas) contain unbelievably detailed descriptions of the physical features of Hazrat Mahdi (as), as well as of his moral virtues, life and activities. Our Prophet (saas) does not provide such detailed information about anyone else or other events that will take place centuries after him.

In the hadiths, our Prophet (saas) reveals separate details for each of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) physical features, using separate descriptive terms for each.

He sometimes refers to a MOLE, or a MARK, a SIGN or a SEAL and likens these to a LEAF, PEARL or STAR.

In addition to all these, Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) complexion, hair and beard color, stature, build, the general outline of his face, the shape of his head and forehead and features such as his eyebrows, nose and teeth are all described in detail. Putting all this information together, it is clear that these features have never been seen together in one person.

Our Lord has revealed such great detail in order to identify Hazrat Mahdi (as) to the entire world.

This reveals how important it is for Muslims to be able to accurately recognize Hazrat Mahdi (as).

When Hazrat Mahdi (as) is encountered, insha’Allah all Muslims will personally see the accuracy of these astonishingly detailed descriptions of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) physical characteristics.

They will also be amazed to see how every stage of this holy individual’s life, everything he does everything that happens to him and the moral values he displays in the face of them will all be in complete agreement with the information revealed by our Prophet (saas) 1400 years ago.

And as a result of all this, they will be able to identify Hazrat Mahdi (as) and realize that he is the “Hazrat Mahdi (as)” who has been awaited with great longing and love for so many years.

How will the Islamic world recognize Hazrat Mahdi (as)?

There is no doubt that the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) are the most important guides to Muslims’ being able to identify Hazrat Mahdi (as).

As a blessing from Allah, Rasulullah (saas) has made people acquainted with Hazrat Mahdi (as) through the most flawless descriptions, as if he had seen and known him and witnessed his life.

Our Prophet’s (saas) descriptions of Hazrat Mahdi (as) are so detailed and explicit that when Hazrat Mahdi (as) appears those who see him will, by Allah’s leave, immediately be able to recognize him.

Allah reveals in the Qur’an that the People of the Book recognizes our Prophet (saas) sent to them as a messenger in the same way they “recognize their own sons:”

Those We have given the Book recognise it as they RECOGNIZE THEIR OWN SONS. Yet a group of them knowingly conceal the truth. (Surat al-Baqara, 146)

In one respect, this verse also indicates how Hazrat Mahdi (as) can easily be recognized by these details revealed in the hadiths.

Birth of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will appear from Turkey

In the hadith of our Prophet (saas) it is mentioned that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will emerge from Turkey and will never leave until the end of his struggle:

"THE MAHDI WILL NEVER LEAVE RUM, THE TURKS (because Turkey used to be known as region of Rum.)”

(Narrated from Ishaf ar-Raghibin by Tilsimlar, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, p. 212)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be born in a large city

In another hadith it is mentioned that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will emerge from a big city :

The Prophet (saas) said: "… a man [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] of the PEOPLE OF MADINA (A LARGE CITY) will come forth to Mecca."

(Mar'iy Ibn Yusuf Ibn Abi Baqr Ibn Ahmad Ibn Yusuf al-Maqdi'si "Faraidu Fawaidi'l Fikr Fi'l Imam Al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

"Madina" means "big city". Thus as our Prophet (saas) mentioned Hazrat Mahdi will be born in medina, in other words, in a big city.

Hazrat Mahdi (as) "will come from the village of Kara"

In one of the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) it is mentioned that Hazrat Mahdi "will come from the village of Kara":

"IT IS SAID THAT HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL COME FROM THE VILLAGE OF KARA"

(Mustafa Resit Filizi, Risalat al-Khuruj al-Mahdi, p. 69)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be born at home

In the hadiths it is also mentioned that the birth of Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be hidden, in other words his birth will be at home:

Imam Zayn-ul Abidin (as) said: "Our Qaim [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] will resemble the messengers of Allah in various ways. He will individually resemble Noah (as), Abraham (as), Moses (as), Jesus (as), Job (as) and Muhammad (saas) and the other prophets. HE WILL RESEMBLE Noah (as) in being long-lived, ABRAHAM (AS) IN HIS BIRTH BEING CONCEALED [AT HOME] and away from the public eye.

(Kamal ad-Din p. 322, Chapter 31, Hadith 3)

Ali Ibn Hussain Zaynal Abidin (as): "HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)] BIRTH WILL BE HIDDEN FROM PEOPLE..."

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 51, p. 135)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) name

"Hazrat Mahdi's (as) name will be compatible with that of our Prophet (saas), but it will not be identical to that of our Prophet (saas)"

The hadith of our Prophet (saas) state that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name will be compatible with that of our Prophet (saas) and that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) father’s name will be compatible with that of the father of the Prophet (saas).

According to Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi’s accounts from Ibn Masud, Rasulullah (saas) said: "His name will be compatible with mine, and his father’s name with my father’s name..."1

"Even if only one day is left to the life of this world, Allah will certainly prolong that day until the coming of a man [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] from the Ahl al-Bayt whose name is compatible with mine."

(narrated in Ahmad Ibn Hanbal’s Musnad)

According to Abdullah Ibn Umar’s (ra) account;
Rasulullah (saas) said: "The world will not come to an end until a man from my Ahl al-Bayt [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] whose name is compatible with mine imposes his rule over all the Arabs."

According to another account, he said:
"Even if only one day remains from the life of this world, Allah will certainly prolong that day until He sends a man from my Ahl al-Bayt [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] whose name is compatible with mine. He will fill the world that was previously filled with cruelty and oppression with truth and justice instead." related by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasai, Bayhaqi and Abu Amr Ad-Dani.

Again according to Abdullah Ibn Umar (ra) he said:
"The world will not come to an end until a man from my Ahl al-Bayt whose name is compatible with mine establishes dominion (on earth). He will fill the world that was previously filled with cruelty and oppression, with truth and justice instead." – Related in Abu al-Qasim Sulaiman ibn Ahmad ibn At-Tabarani "al- Mu’jam As-Saghir." In addition, Tirmidhi’s "Al-Jami" and Abu Dawud’s "Sunan" by and large repeat this account, with a few minor alterations.

The hadith emphasize that these names will be "compatible with one another." In other words, one must not expect Hazrat Mahdi (as) to be directly called "Ahmad or Muhammad,"nor his father to go by the name of "Abdullah." (Allah knows the truth.)

Ahmad Muhammad Hazrat Mahdi (as) is the name Allah gives to one who will come in the End Times. Rasulullah (saas) has reported that name. In other words, his birth name will not be “Ahmad Muhammad Mahdi.” This is a name given him by Allah. Our Prophet (saas) does not say “his name will be the same as mine” in the hadith; he says “it will be compatible with mine.” In the same way, he says, “His father’s name will be compatible with my father’s name.” There is a sign and a secret in this.

Allah has selected the person He wishes in destiny and has given him the name “Ahmad Muhammad Mahdi.” Some being given or not being given that name cannot change situation in the slightest.

Our Prophet (saas) kept the name of Hazrat Mahdi (as) secret

Jabir quotes from Abu Ja’far: “When Umar asked Hazrat Ali (ra) about Mahdi, he (Umar) said: Ibn Abu Talib (Hazrat Ali), tell me about Mahdi. What is his name?” And Hazrat Ali (ra) said: “My dear, close friend, our Prophet saas) said: “ALLAH HAD ME PROMISE NOT TO REVEAL HIS NAME TO ANYBODY UNTIL HE WOULD APPEAR. HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] NAME IS ONE OF THE KNOWLEDGE WHICH ALLAH ENTRUSTED UPON HIS MESSENGER.

(Iqmal al-Din) (Gaybah, Allame Muhammad Baqir Majlisi, Ansariyan Publishing, Iran, 2007)

Hazrat Ali (ra), Asadullah (the Lion of Allah), asked our Prophet (saas) to reveal the name of Hazrat Mahdi (as), who will emerge in the End Times and will have the greatest role and will be the wali (saint) of the End Times. But our Prophet (saas) stated that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name would be kept as a secret until Allah would have him emerged and this was a confidential information that Allah had entrusted upon him. We therefore understand that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name will be kept as a secret i.e. will be unknown to people until its time to come. That is, Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) name will not be one of the names of our Prophet (saas) such as Ahmad, Mustafa or Muhammad but it will be determined when he (saas) will emerge.

The line of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be descended from our Prophet (saas)

All the prophets are related to one another.

According to the hadiths, the Hazrat Mahdi (as) will also be descended from that same line.

People descended from the Prophet (saas) are popularly known as “sayyid”:

It is related from the blessed Ali that the Prophet (saas) stated: “Even if no more than a day remains until the day of Judgment, ALLAH WILL SEND AN INDIVIDUAL (THE HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) FROM MY AHL AL-BAYT.”

(Sunan Abu Dawud, 5/92)

Days and nights will not end until ONE FROM MY HOUSE rules the entire world.

(Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib)

Learn the glad tidings of Hazrat Mahdi (as). HE IS FROM THE QURAISH AND ONE OF MY HOUSE.

(Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, p. 13)

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS ONE OF MY CHILDREN. His face is like a star shining in the heavens.”

(Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad al-Qari al-Hanafi “Risalat al- Mashrab al-Vardi fi mazhab al-Mahdi”)

In the Qur’an it is revealed that all prophets are related to one another:

Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ‘Imran over all other beings – descendants one of the other. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

(Surah Al 'Imran, 33-34)

Our Lord, make us both Muslims submitted to You, and OUR DESCENDANTS A MUSLIM COMMUNITY SUBMITTED TO YOU. Show us our rites of worship and turn towards us. You are the Ever-Returning, the Most Merciful.

(Surat al-Baqara, 128)

AND SOME OF THEıR FOREBEARS, DESCENDANTS AND BROTHERS; WE CHOSE THEM AND GUIDED THEM TO A STRAIGHT PATH.

(Surat al-An'am, 87)

One Characteristic that will establish Hazrat Mahdi's (as) identity is his descent from Hazrat Hassan (ra)

People descended from the Hazrat Hassan (ra), grandson of the Prophet (saas) through his daughter Hazrat Fatima (ra) are known as “sayyid” in Islamic culture. People descended from the Prophet Muhammad’s (saas) other grandson Hazrat Hussein (ra) also used to be referred to as sayyid, but such people later began to be known as “shariff.”

In the hadith, our Prophet (saas) has revealed that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have “distinctive and distinguishing features” so that Muslims can recognize him. One of these is that “Hazrat Mahdi will be descended from the Hazrat Hassan (ra).”

We are told in some detail in the hadith and in the works of Islamic scholars who handed down the hadith that Hazrat Mahdi (as) is a sayyid and a descendant of Hazrat Hassan (ra). Some of these hadith read:

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS A CHILD OF FATIMA AND DESCENDED FROM HASSAN."

(Abu Dawud, Hazrat Mahdi (as), 1)

Abdul-Ghafir ibn Isma`il al-Farisi in his book Majma al-Gharaib and Ibn al-Jawzi in the fi Garib al-Hadith and in An-Nihaya Ibn al-Athir have stated that Hazrat Ali (ra) said this about the hadith:

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS DESCENDED FROM HAZRAT HASSAN.

(Ali Ibn Husamaddin al-Muttaqi, Hadith from the Jalaladdin Suyuticollection – Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 22)

Tamman in his Fawaid and Ibn Athaqir relate from Abdullah Ibn Amr that he said: A CHILD OF HASSAN [THE MAHDI (AS)] will appear from the east, and even if mountains stand against him, he will crush them and use those mountains as roads.

(Ali Ibn Husamaddin al-Muttaqi, Hadith from the Jalaladdin SuyutiCollection – Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 22)

According to another hadith that has come down from Hazrat Ali, he looked at his son Hazrat Hassan one day and said: “As named by the Prophet (saas), this son of mine is a sayyid. (from the lineage of the Prophet (saas)) Someone [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] known by the name of the Prophet WILL COME FROM THE LINE OF HASSAN, and will resemble him [the Prophet (saas)] in moral values, but not in his nature (physical and body features).”

(Al-Taj V, 363)

The age of Hazrat Mahdi (as)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will begin work between the ages of 30 and 40

In the hadiths, our Prophet (saas) refers to the years when Hazrat Mahdi (as) is still unknown to people but when he begins work to bring about the global dominion of Islamic morals. This period is described as lasting 30-40 years, and with his activities during it, Hazrat Mahdi (as) will attract people’s notice, and these will be the years when people watch what he does. However, people will not know that he is Hazrat Mahdi (as) during this time, and they will only realize the truth very much later.

The following information about the age of Hazrat Mahdi (as) is provided in the hadiths:

HE WILL BE SENT WHEN HE IS BETWEEN 30 AND 40. THE MAHDI IS ONE OF MY CHILDREN. HE IS AROUND 40.

(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl Al-Mukhtasar, P. 41)

The Mahdi is one of my people. HE IS 40 YEARS OLD. His face is like a bright star.

(Mariy ibn Yusuf ibn Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Makdisi Fara Idu Fawaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

"HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] IS A YOUNG MAN."

(Mariy ibn Yusuf ibn Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Makdisi Fara Idu Fawaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be of advanced age, but look young

In the End Times in which we are living, it is notable how many young people undergo a rapid physical collapse. Many young people develop wrinkly skin very early, with lines constantly developing around their eyes and signs of aging rapidly manifesting themselves.
Hazrat Mahdi (as) will age as time passes just like all other people. Yet Allah will preserve Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) youthful appearance, and he will look 40 even in advanced years. Therefore, this will also be a distinguishing feature of Hazrat Mahdi (as). People will recognize Hazrat Mahdi (as) by the way he still looks extraordinarily young, despite his advancing age, and maintains his physical beauty.

Our Prophet (saas) describes this characteristic of Hazrat Mahdi (as) as follows in the hadiths:

And ONE OF HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)] SIGNS IS THAT HE WILL NOT AGE WITH THE PASSAGE OF DAYS AND NIGHTS.

(Muntakhab al-Asar, Lutfullah Gulpaygani, p. 285)

Hazrat Riza (as) replied to Rayyan Ibn Salti when he asked whether he were the Sahib al-Amr (Master of the Authority): Yes, I am also Sahib al-Amr . But I am not the Sahib al-Amr who will fill the world with justice. How could I be that Sahib al-Amr despite all this weakness and feebleness you see? THE PROMISED QAIM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL APPEAR ADVANCED IN AGE, BUT WILL HAVE A YOUTHFUL APPEARANCE.

(Bihar Al-Anwar, Vol. 52, p. 32; Ithbat Al- Hudat, Vol. 6, p. 19)

HE WILL BE LONG-LIVED AND HAVE A YOUTHFUL FACE. PEOPLE WHO SEE HIM WILL THINK HE IS A MAN AGED AROUND 40, AND HE WILL NOT AGE UNTILL ALLAH’S COMMAND ARRIVES...

(Kamal ad-Din, p. 625 and al-Muntahab al-Azhar, vol. 2. P 284)

From Abu Said: Hasan b. Ali ... he said: “... DURING HIS (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) TIME OF OCCULTATION ALLAH WILL EXTEND HIS LIFE, AND HE WILL THEN MANIFEST HIM WITH HIS POWER LOOKING YOUNGER THAN FORTY and this will be so that people know of Allah’s Omnipotence.”

(Kamal ad-Din, Vol. 1, p. 315)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) general appearance

Hazrat Mahdi (as) is of medium stature, like our Prophet (saas)

Our Prophet (saas) is described as being of medium height in accounts from the Shamail Sharif:

Anas stated that: "THE PROPHET (SAAS) WAS OF MIDDLING HEIGHT."

(Hadith at-Tirmidhi, Shamail Sharif, p. 15)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be of average height, like our Prophet (saas):

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL BE OF AVERAGE HEIGHT.

(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl Al-Mukhtasar, P. 41)

According to accounts by Abu Abdullah Nuaym ibn Hammad from Abu Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali Al-Bakir, Hazrat Ali (as) was asked about the attributes of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and replied: "HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS OF MEDIUM HEIGHT AND A YOUNG MAN with an attractive face…"

(Al-Uqayli "An-Najm al-saqib fi Bayan Anna al-Mahdi min Awladi Ali Ibn Abu Talib Ala't-Tamam wa al-qamal ")

“... HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) IS ONE OF THOSE OF MEDIUM STATURE...”

(Muhyiddin IbnArabi, al-Jawab al-Mustaqim amma Seele anhu al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi, Bayazid, no: 3750, page 242b)

"…HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) IS OF MEDIUM HEIGHT, with an attractive face and attractive hair..."

(Ahbar ad- Duwal, p. 117 - Hijri 1382 edition)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) is very majestic and sturdily built

The hadiths say that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be majestic, sturdily built and have a striking appearance:

“He is majestic…with a (broad) brow.

(Iqdud Durar)

Mugaira Nasr says: When I asked Imam Jaffar Sadiq, “HOW WILL THE IMAM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] BE RECOGNIZED?” he replied: BY HIS GRANDEUR AND DIGNITY. (Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 283)

… Abu’l Jarud says:
When I asked Imam Muhammad Bakir, “... HOW WILL THE IMAM [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] BE KNOWN?” he replied:“BY HIS SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE AND GRANDEUR AND BY THE GREAT MUHAMMAD’S (SAAS) REPETITION OF HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)] VIRTUES.”

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 284)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will resemble the children of Israel in appearance

Our Prophet (saas) has revealed in the hadiths that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will resemble the Children of Israel in appearance. The reference in the hadiths to the “B’nai Israel” means that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be physically “powerful and majestic:”

THE BLESSED MAHDI'S STATURE AND POSTURE RESEMBLE THOSE
OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL.

(Al-Qawl Al-Mukhtasar Fi Alamat Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar, p. 29.)

HIS BODY IS AN ISRAELITE ONE.

(Al-Burhan Fi Alamat Al-Mahdi Akhir Al-Zaman, p. 24.)

THE MAHDI IS LIKE ONE OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL. (HIS DEMEANOR RESEMBLES THEIRS, IT IS MAJESTIC AND WISE)

(Al-Burhan Fi Alamat Al-Mahdi Akhir Al-Zaman, pp. 23-30.)

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) is one of my grandchildren... HIS BODY RESEMBLES THAT OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL...”

(Al-Bayan fi Akhbari Sahib az-Zaman)

HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL RESEMBLE ONE OF THE ISRAELITES [IN HIS EXTERNAL APPEARANCE].

(Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-Saqib Fi Bayan Anna'l Mahdi Min Awladi Ali B. Abu Talib Ale't-Tamam Ve'l Qamal)

HAZRAT MAHDI'S (AS) STATURE AND POSTURE RESEMBLE THOSE OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL.

(Al-Qawl Al-Mukhtasar Fi Alamat Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar, pp. 36-29.)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) body is broad

One of the features of Hazrat Mahdi (as) revealed by our Prophet (saas) is that, just like the Prophet (saas), his who body will be very broad, or in other works majestic:

HE IS LARGE OF BODY.

(al-Uqayli, an-Najmu al Saqib)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) stomach is wide

Hazrat Mahdi (as) is described as having a body that is entirely majestic and broad, and his stomach will be wide in proportion to the rest of his body:

His stomach is large...

(Mariy Ibn Yusuf Ibn Abu Bakr Ibn Ahmad Ibn Yusuf Al-Makdisi Fara Idu Fawaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar”)

From Yahya ibn Nufal, indeed Musa ibn Ja’afar (as) raise his hands and supplicates after Asr prayer, I inquire from him saying, to whom did you offer prayer for? He said: to Al-Mahdi among the family of Muhammad (saas) and said: HE IS HAVING BIG STOMACH, his eyebrow very close, HIS LEGS ARE VERY ENERGETIC, HIS SHOULDER IS WIDE.

(Bihar al-Anwar: 86-81).

In another tradition Hazrat Ali (as) again mentions about Imam Mahdi (a.s) in the
following words: “HE SHALL HAVE A CLEAR AND WIDE BELLY, BROAD THIGHS, ...”

(Yanabiul Mawaddah, p. 423)

Through his forefather Hazrat Imam Muhammad Bakir (as), Abu Ja’far has narrated that the chief of Ahl al-Bayt, Amir al-Momineen (as) proclaimed from the pulpit as, “IN THE LAST AGE A MAN [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] FROM MY PROGENY WOULD RISE…HAVING A CLEAR AND WIDE BELLY and his thighs would be broad and his bones shall be long (big) and prominent….

(Imam Mehdi’nin Hayatı (Life of Imam Mahdi), Allama Bakir al-Shariff al-Quraysh)

Humran bin A’yân says: To Imam Muhammad Bakir: "… YOUR LORD HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL HAVE A WIDE STOMACH ...”

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani p. 253)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) shoulders are wide

Another hadith notes that Hazrat Mahdi (as), whose whole body is broad and majestic, will also have broad shoulders in proportion to the rest of his body:

From Yahya ibn Nufal, indeed Musa ibn Ja’afar (peace be upon him) raise his hands and supplicates after Asr prayer, I inquire from him saying, to whom did you offer prayer for? He said: to Al-Mahdi among the family of Muhammad (saas) and said: …HIS SHOULDER IS WIDE.

(Bihar al-Anwar: 86-81)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) thighs will be broad and with a gap between them

Since Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a wide stomach, his thighs will naturally be broad, as well.

In another tradition Hazrat Ali (as) again mentions about Imam Mahdi (as) in the
following words: “He [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] shall have a wide forehead and a clear and wide belly, BROAD THIGH...”

(Yanabiul Mawaddah, p. 423)

(THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN HIS THIGHS...

(Mar'i İbn Yusuf Al-Maqdisi "Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar, p.13)

Through his forefather Hazrat Imam Muhammad Bakir (a.s), Abu Ja’far has narrated that the chief of Ahl al-Bayt, Amir al-Momineen (as)
proclaimed from the pulpit as, “In the last age a man [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] from my progeny would rise…and having a clear and wide belly AND HIS THIGHS WOULD BE BROAD… (İmam Mehdi’nin Hayatı (Life of Imam Mahdi), Allama Bakir al-Shariff al-Quraysh)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) gait will also be extraordinarily majestic

Because of the breadth of his thighs and the space between them, Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) gait will also be exceedingly majestic, and his feet will point outward. Our Prophet (saas) speaks of this characteristic of Hazrat Mahdi (as) as follows:

One Feature of his is That AS HE WALKS THERE IS A SPACE BETWEEN HIS THIGHS, AND THEY ARE AT A DISTANCE FROM ONE ANOTHER.

(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl Al-Mukhtasar, P. 32)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will use his hand to emphasize what he is saying

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will use his hands when he talks; he will move his hand as he wishes to emphasize what he is saying and that people will see those motions:

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL BE SLOW OF SPEECH. HE WILL STRIKE HIS LEFT KNEE WITH HIS RIGHT HAND WHEN HE SPEAKS SLOWLY AND STEADILY.

(Jalaladdin Suyuti, Portents of the Judgment Day, Death and Resurrection, p. 174)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) complexion will be "Arabic", like that of our Prophet (saas), in other words, "a white tending to red"

The complexion of the Arab race is white mixed with red. The complexion that tends to resemble red, which comes into existence as a result of the effects of the sun and winds, is called dark complexion; and the color of the skin remaining under the clothes so that no sunrays reach is called white complexion.

Rasulullah’s (saas) is described as follows in Islamic reference sources:

IT WAS A LUMINOUS REDDISH-WHITE.

(Ibn Kathir, Shamail ar-Rasul, p. 28)

Anas ibn Malik narrates: ". THE COLOR OF HIS HOLY (SOMETHING ON WHICH DIVINE GOODNESS HAS BEEN BESTOWED) FACE WAS SAINTLY WHITE.”

(At-Tirmidhi Imam Abu I'sa Muhammad, Shamail Sharif, Vol. 2, Hilal Press, Ankara, 1976, pp. 7-8)

Hz. Hasan narrates: "OUR PROPHET’S (SAAS) COLORING WAS WHITISH AND BRIGHT..."

(At-Tirmidhi Imam Abu I'sa Muhammad, Shamail Sharif, Vol. 1, Hilal Press, Ankara, 1976, p. 18-22-23)

Anas ibn Malik (ra) narrates: " HIS COMPLEXION WAS NEITHER WHITE, NOR DARK.

(Sunan at-Tirmidhi Translation, Translated by: Osman Zeki Mollamehmetoğlu, Yunus Emre Press, Istanbul, Vol. 4, p. 201)

RASULLULLAH (SAAS) WAS A WHITISH PINK IN COLOR…"

(Hz. Ali (ra), G. Ahmed Ziyauddin, Ramuz al-Ahadith, Vol. 2, Gonca Press, Istanbul, 1997, p. 519/4)

Anas ibn Malik said this about our Prophet’s (saas) complexion: HE WAS WHITE, BUT A DARKISH WHITE.

(Ibn Kathir, Shamail ar-Rasul, p. 28)

The accounts show that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have the same complexion as that of our Prophet (saas).

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) HAS ARAB COLORING.

(Ibn Hajar Al Makki; Al-Qawlul Muhtasar Fi Alamat al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar, pp. 15-75)

HIS COLORING IS ARAB.

(Portents of the Judgment Day, Barzanji, p. 162-163)

HE IS ARAB IN COLORING.

(Al-Burhan fi' 'Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, 24)

Through his forefather Imam Muhammad Bakir (a.s), Abu Ja’far has narrated that the chief of Ahl al-Bayt, Amirul Momineen (a.s) proclaimed from the pulpit as, “IN THE LAST AGE A MAN [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] FROM MY PROGENY WOULD RISE, HAVING A FAIR COMPLEXION THAT HAS SOME REDNESS (HUE) …

(Imam Mehdi’nin Hayati (Life of Imam Mahdi), Allama Bakir al-Shariff al-Quraysh)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) is from my descendants. His face is like a bright star and HIS COMPLEXION IS OF ARAB and his body is of an Israelite.

(Al Bayan fi Akhbare Sahib az- Zaman)

Characteristics of Hazrat Mahdi's (as) face, described in the most amazing detail

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) face is very beutiful, bright as pearl and luminous

HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL BE HANDSOME AND HIS FACE WILL BE BEAUTIFUL. THE DIVINE LIGHT OF HIS FACE REACHES FOR HIS HEAD AND THE BLACK OF HIS HAIR.

(Mehdilik Ve Imamiye (Mahdism And Imamate), 153 (From Iqdud Durar)

“HE IS BEAUTIFUL OF FACE. THE LIGHT OF HIS COUNTENANCE BESTOWS GRANDEUR ON HIM”

(Mar’iy Ibn Yusuf Ibn Abu Bakir Ibn Ahmad Ibn Yusuf Al-Makdi’s “Feraidu Fevaidi’l Fikr Fi’l Imam Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar”)

He [Hazrat Mahdi (as)] is a young man of medium stature and with a beautiful face … the radiance of his face shines like day in his hair, beard, and the blackness of his head, and gives him greatness.

(Al-Uqayli, Al-Najmu Al-Saqib )

Humran bin A'yân says, to Imam Muhammad Bakir: "… Your lord HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) has a wide stomach, and a mark on his forehead AND A BEAUTIFUL FACE."

(Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 253)

It is reported that Hazrat Imam Huseyin said: "People will not recognize Hazrat Mahdi (as) when he appears. Because HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL APPEAR AS ONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL FACE..."

(Iqdud Durar, p. 41)

"...HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] IS A TEMPERATE YOUNG MAN WITH AN ATTRACTIVE FACE and hair, a fine nose and broad face."

(Simt al-Nujum al'awali, Vol 4, p. 138) (Hazrat. Mahdi (as), Abdullah Turan, Al-i Taha, p. 157)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) is one of my children. HIS FACE IS LIKE A STAR SHINING IN THE HEAVENS.

(Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad al-Qari al-Hanafi Risalat al- Mashrab al-Vardi fi mazhab al-Mahdi)

The Prophet (saas) said: “Hazrat Mahdi (as) is one of my children. HIS FACE IS LIKE A BRIGHT STAR.”

(Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib)

HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) IS AN INDIVIDUAL FROM MY LINE. HIS FACE IS LIKE THE PEARL STAR.

(Abu Dawud, Mahdi 1., Portents of the Judgment Day, Ismail Mutlu p. 155)

HIS (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) FACE IS BRIGHT, LIKE A SHINING STAR.

(Ahmad Ibn Ibn Hajar al-Makki (Haytami), The Book of Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 33; Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 22)

“Mahdi is from my descendants. HIS FACE IS LIKE A BRIGHT STAR, ... All the folks of the heaven and the earth and also the birds would be happy during his kingdom and caliphate. He would reign for twenty years.”

(Al Bayan fi Akhbare Sahib az-Zaman)

This information in the hadiths about the beauty and brightness of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face bears a close similarity to the Prophet Joseph (as). As we know, our Prophet (saas) says in the hadiths “There will be similarities between the lives of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and the Prophet Joseph (as)”:

Muhammad Bakir said: “THE PERSON CONCERNED (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) WILL RESEMBLE THE PROPHET JOSEPH (AS).”

(Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani P. 189)

Just like the Prophet Joseph (as), Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a beautiful and radiant face that has a profound impact on people and inspires great admiration. The beauty of the Prophet Joseph (as) is revealed as follows in the Qur’an:

... When they saw him, they were amazed by him and cut their hands. They said, ‘Allah preserve us! This is no man. What can this be but a noble angel here!’ (Surah Yusuf, 31)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a peaceful and calming countenance

Another characteristic of Hazrat Mahdi (as) is how with his lofty moral values, depth, powerful personality and the perfection of his behavior, all stemming from faith, he inspires calm and trust in people around him. This important characteristic is also reflected in Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face. Just by looking at his face, people will be able to see Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) profound faith in and submission to Allah.

Under the effect of this faith-inspired calm reflected in his face, everyone will find people alongside him. This attribute of Hazrat Mahdi (as) is described in this hadith:

The prominent and acknowledged poet, Agha Sayyid Hasan has thus mentioned about Hazrat Mahdi (as): “THE ELEGANCE CAME UP (AROSE) THROUGH HIS CLEAR FACE. THE MORNING BREEZE SPREAD FROM HIS CALMING COUNTENANCE.”

[ Minanur Rahman, 2/237]

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) skin is very beautiful and bright

Many hadiths reveal that Hazrat Mahdi (as), who will appear to be aged around 40, will have very bright, beautiful and healthy skin:

HIS FACE IS SOMETIMES LIGHT IN COLOR AND BRIGHT AS GOLD AND SOMETIMES DARK IN COLOR AND BRIGHT LIKE THE MOON.

(Bihar Al-Anwar, Vol. 13)

HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS) FACE WILL SOMETIMES BE DARK AND BRIGHT, TANNED IN THE SUN, AND AT OTHER TIMES IT WILL BE LIGHT, of his own Arab complexion, meaning a pinkish color, and bright.

(Bihar al-Anwar, v. 13)

“HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS) SKIN IS VERY BRIGHT.”

(Bihar al-Anwar, v. 13, p. 243 (Farsi translation))

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) hair is black

According to accounts narrated by Abu Abdullah Nuaym b. Hammad from Abu Jaffar ibn Mohammad ibn Ali Al-Bakir, Hazrat Ali (as) was asked of the characteristics of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and he answered as follows:

THE LIGHT OF HIS FACE RISES TO HIS HEAD AND THE BLACK OF HIS HAIR.

(Mahdism And Imamate, P. 153)

HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) HAS BLACK HAIR. HIS BEARD IS BLACK.

(Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr)

THE RADIANCE OF HIS FACE SHINES LIKE DAY IN HIS HAIR, beard and the blackness of his head, and gives him greatness.

(al-Uqayli, al-Najmu al-Saqib)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) hair is strikingly thick and beautiful

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will attract people’s attention by the thickness and beauty of his hair, as well as by his bodily majesty and the loveliness of his face. The hadiths reveal this feature of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) hair thus:

“HIS (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS) HAIR IS VERY THICK...”

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13)

Ahmad ibn Yusuf B. Ahmad al-Dimashqi al-Qaramani (1019), a famous Sunni scholar, writes in his book the “Akhbar al-Duwal:” “…HE [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] WILL BE OF MEDIUM HEIGHT WITH A BEAUTIFUL FACE AND HAIR...”(Akhbar al-Duwal, p. 117 printed in 1382 (Hijri calendar))

'Abd al-Malik al-Shafi'i al-Makki al-'Isami (1111), a famous historian resident in Macca, writes in his four volume work of history the “Simt al-Nujum al'awali:” “... HE [THE MAHDI (AS)] IS A MODEST YOUNG MAN WITH A BEAUTIFUL FACE AND BEAUTIFUL HAIR, WIDE FACE AND A SLENDER NOSE.”

(Simt al-Nujum al'awali, Vol. 4, p. 138) (The Mahdi, Abdullah Turan, Al-i Taha, p. 157)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) has a broad face

The hadiths describe how Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) whole body is very broad and splendid.

In parallel to these details provided about his body, the hadiths also say that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) “face is also broad”

"... HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) is a gentle, YOUNG MAN with an attractive face, beautiful hair, a thin nose and A BROAD FACE."

(Sımt-ul Nucum-il Avali, Vol. 4, p. 138) (Hz. Mehdi Aleyhisselam, Abdullah Turan, Al-i Taha, p. 157)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) has a clear, wide brow

The hadiths state that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as), whole body and face will be broad, and “will also have a wide brow.”

All these details about his face and forehead show that, like the holy head of our Prophet (saas), Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) head will also be quite large.

Some of the hadiths referring to the width of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) brow are as follows:

“HAZRAT MAHDI HASS DESCENDED FROM ME. HIS BROW WILL BE BROAD.”

(Abu Dawud, 4285)

His BROW WILL BE BROAD, and his nose fine.

(Tirmidhi, Great Hadith Collection, Rudani Vol. 5, p. 365)

“HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) IS BROAD OF BROW...”
(Muhammad Ibn Rasul Al-Husayn Al Barzanji, Portents of the Day of Judgment)

“HAZRAT MAHDI HAS DESCENDED FROM ME… HE HAS A CLEAR BROW.”

(Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 21)

HE HAS A CLEAR BROW.

(Mar’iy ibn Yusuf ibn Abu Bakr ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Makdisi Fara Idu Fawaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar")

“ALMIGHTY ALLAH WILL SEND A CHILD OF MINE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS), one from my line, WITH A CLEAR BROW, who will fill the world with justice and offer goods in plenty to people.”

(Ibn Hajar al-Haytami al-Makki, Portents of the Awaited Mahdi, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi alamat Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar, p. 23)

Certain it is that ALLAH WILL SEND A PERSON [HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)] FROM MY LINE WITH A CLEAR BROW.

(Fara Idu Fawaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar, p. 11)

“HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) WILL HAVE A CLEAR BROW …”

(Imam Suyuti, Portents of the Judgment Day, Death and Resurrection, p.1699, p.174)

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) HAS A CLEAR BROW.”

(This hadith is narrated in the Abu Dawud Sunan and by Hakim in the al-Mustadrak.)

“HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) HAS A BROAD BROW.”

(The hadith also suggests that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a large head.) (Ali Ibn Husamaddin al-Muttaqi, Hadiths from Jalaladdin Suyuti's Commentary – Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times, p. 22)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) forehead will be bright

The hadiths describe Hazrat Mahdi (as) as having a very bright and attractive skin, and as a reflection of this characteristic, his brow will also be bright and striking:

Abu Saeed Khudri narrates from the Messenger of Allah (saas) that he said, “Indeed, the
Almighty Allah will raise from my progeny and Ahl al-Bayt a man, who would have appropriate gap between his front teeth and HAVE A BRIGHT FOREHEAD so that he may fill the earth with justice, welfare and economic equality.”

(Iqdud Durar fi Akhbar-e-Muntazar, p. 101)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a slight concavity on his forehead

The hadith notes the presence of a small concavity on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) broad forehead:

His (Hazrat Mahdi’s (as)) hair is thick, his forehead is broad and there is a slight concavity on his forehead.

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a mole on his forehead

Abu Basir quotes Imam Muhammad Bakir (as) or Ja'far as-Sadiq (as) (the uncertainty stems from the narrator) that he said: "There are two signs of the Qaim (as). There will be a mark and a mole on the head and a mole between the shoulders.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 253)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a mark (scar) on his forehead

Other hadiths report that there will be “A MARK” on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) brow:

Humran bin A'ayan says: I asked Imam Muhammad Bakir (as): ... THERE WILL BE A MARK ON HIS FOREHEAD, and a mole on his face.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 252)

Humran bin A'ayan quotes Imam Muhammad Bakir (as) that he said: "... the Mahdi, WILL HAVE A MARK ON HIS FOREHEAD, and his face will be beautiful..."

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, pp. 252-253)

This mark on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) brow is probably A SCAR. In addition, the use of the word “mark” in the hadiths, instead of “mole,” suggests that the mark will be lighter in color than a mole.

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) eyebrows are curved

One of the characteristics that will identify Hazrat Mahdi (as) to people is that his eyebrows are curved:

HIS (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) EYEBROWS ARE CURVED.

(Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah, P. 163)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a dip between his eyebrows

In this hadith narrated from our Prophet (saas), it is said that Hazrat Mahdi (as) WILL HAVE A NATURAL DIP (IN THE FORM OF A SINGLE LINE) between his eyebrows.

Hazrat Mahdi (as)… WILL HAVE A SMALL DIP BETWEEN HIS EYEBROWS …

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13, p. 243 [Farsi translation])

Hazrat Mahdi (as) has slanted eyes

Another of the astonishing details about Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face provided in the hadiths is that he has slanted eyes:

Humran bin A'ayan says: I asked Imam Muhammad Bakir: ... The Mahdi will have SLANTED EYES...

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 252)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) nose is handsome and thin

Our Prophet (saas) has informed us in the hadith about the beauty of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face. One feature of the beauty of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face is that he has a small, fine and thin nose:

HIS BROW IS BROAD, AND HIS NOSE WILL BE THIN.

(Hadith Al-Tirmidhi)

HE WILL HAVE A CLEAR BROW AND A SMALL NOSE.

(Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah, P. 163)

"...HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) IS A TEMPERATE YOUNG MAN WITH AN ATTRACTIVE FACE AND HAIR, A FINE NOSE AND broad face."

(Simt al-Nujum al'awali, Vol 4, p. 138) (Hz. Mahdi Aleyhisselam, Abdullah Turan, Al-i Taha, p. 157)

According to Abu Said Al Hudri ‘s account, Rasulullah (saas) said: "The Mahdi (as) is from my line. He will have a clear brow and A FINE NOSE...

(Ahmad ibn Hanbal II-291, 111-17, Sunan Abu Dawud Translation and Commentary, Samil Press: 14/403-404.)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) nose is small...

(Bihar al-Anwar, V. 13)

According to Imam Ahme Abu Ya’la, Samuyah and Abu Said in al-Muhtara, our Prophet (saas) said: Day of Judgment will not take place until SOMEONE from my ahl al-bayt, with straight hair, a clear brow and A FLAWLESS NOSE fills the world that was filled with oppression before him, with justice instead. (Muhammad ibn Salih ad-Dimashqi, The Prophet (saas) Collection, p. 202)

There is a slight protrusion on the center of Hazrat Mahdi's (as) nose

Our Prophet (saas) has reported that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a slight protrusion on the center of his nose:

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) has thick hair, a broad brow and a slight cavity on his brow. HIS NOSE IS SMALL AND THERE IS A SMALL PROTRUSION ON THE CENTER OF HIS NOSE...”

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13)

There is a mole on Hazrat Mahdi's (as) cheek

One of the very detailed pieces of information about Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face in the hadiths is that he will have a mole on his cheek. It appears from the accounts that the mole on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) cheek will resemble a pearl and be as bright as a star, in other words very light in color:

THERE IS A MARK ON HIS CHEEK, REMINISCENT OF A PEARL, ILUMINATING HIS FACE LIKE A STAR.

(Muhammad Ibn Rasul Al-Husseini Al-Barzanji, "Portents Of the Judgment Day" Pamuk Publications, Trans. Naim Erdogan)

The Mahdi has a thick beard, bright front teeth, A MOLE ON HIS FACE, and a broad forehead.

(Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr)

HE (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)) HAS A MOLE ON HIS FACE.

(al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 41)

The presence on the cheek of A SIGN ENLIGHTENING THE STAR-LIKE FACE, REMINISCENT OF A PEARL, of Hazrat Mahdi (as) has been reported in the hadiths. Not only the word “mole” is used for this feature of Hazrat Mahdi (as), as all the features of this mole have been described. Terms such as “reminiscent of a pearl,” “like a star” and “illuminating” provide great detail about its shape and color. All this information shows that this mole will be the color of skin and not dark.

The mole on Hazrat Mahdi's (as) cheek will rotrude from it

It is also reported in the hadiths that the mole on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) cheek will protrude from it:

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) has thick hair, a broad brow and a slight cavity on his forehead. His nose is small and there is a small protrusion right on the center. THERE IS A PROTRUDING MOLE ON HIS CHEEK.”

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13)

The mole on Hazrat Mahdi's (as) cheek will resemble that of the Prophet Moses (as)

The hadith notes that the Prophet MOSES (as) had a similar mole on his cheek to the light-colored one on the cheek of Hazrat Mahdi (as). Hazrat Mahdi (as) descended from our Prophet (saas) and comes from the same line as all the Prophets. Allah has used this blood bond to create similarities between the other Prophets and Hazrat Mahdi (as).

The similarity between the moles on the face of Hazrat Mahdi (as) and that of the Prophet MOSES (as) is described thus in the hadiths:

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will HAVE A DIP at the beginning of his straight nose, BETWEEN HIS EYEBROWS. AS WITH THE PROPHET MOSES (AS), THE MOLE ON HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS) CHEEK WILL PROTRUDE SLIGHTLY AND BE BRIGHT LIKE A STAR. HIS COMPLEXION IS VERY BRIGHT.

(Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 13, p. 243 [Farsi translation])

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) beard is black

Another piece of information that identifies Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) face is that, like his hair, his beard is black:

HE HAS BLACK HAIR. HIS BEARD IS BLACK. (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr)

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) beard will be copious and thick

Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) beard is strikingly attractive and thick:

HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS) BEARD IS THICK.

(Signs of The Judgment Day, 163)

“...THE RADIANCE OF HIS [HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)] FACE, his hair, HIS BEARD and THE BLACKNESS ON HIS HEAD SHINE LIKE DAY AND GIVE HIM GREATNESS.”

(Al-Uqayli "An-Najm al-saqib fi Bayan Anna al-Mahdi min Awladi Ali Ibn Abu Talib Ala't-Tamam wa al-qamal ")

“HAZRAT MAHDI (AS) HAS A THICK BEARD...”

(Mar'iy Ibn Yusuf Ibn Abi Baqr Ibn Ahmad Ibn Yusuf al-Maqdi'si "Faraidu Fawaidi'l Fikr Fi'l Imam Al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar")

His (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) beard will be copious and THICK.

(Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi alamat Al-Mahdi Al-Muntadhar p. 23)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a light beard, thin at the sides and long at the front

A MAN OF AVERAGE HEIGHT, DARK, WITH A LIGHT BEARD, THIN AT THE SIDE AND LONG IN THE FRONT. ...

(Al-Fatawa al-Hadithiyyah, Abul Abbas Shahabuddin Ahmad Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, p. 41)

One of the details our Prophet (saas) supplies about Hazrat Mahdi (as) is to do with his beard. Our Prophet (saas) has said in several hadith that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be bearded, and in this hadith he provides detail about the shape of that beard. He says that Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) the texture of his beard will be light, and that the sides will be thin while the lower part is long.

Hazrat Mahdi's (as) front teeth will be bright

One of the distinguishing features of our Prophet (saas) was the brightness of his teeth:

"RASULULLAH (SAAS) was very handsome and attractive. His holy face shone like the fourteenth day of the full moon... His nose was very attractive... he had a thick beard, large eyes and smooth cheeks. His mouth was wide and HIS TEETH WERE BRIGHT LIKE PEARLS... His neck was like a silver beam... The space between his shoulders was broad and the ends of his shoulder bones were thick..."

(Great Hadith Collection, Cem'ul-fevaid min Jami'il-usul ve Faharis kitab Majma' al-zawaid, , Muhammad bin Sulayman Al-Maghribi Ar-Rudani, Vol. 5, Iz Press, p. 31)

The hadiths note the brightness of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) teeth, like those of our Prophet (saas):

In another hadith Hazrat Ali (as) again speaks of the Imam Mahdi (as) in the words: “... HIS FRONT TEETH ARE BRIGHT ....”

(Yanaabee al-Mawaddah, p. 423)

His (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) TEETH WILL BE BRIGHT.

(Nu'aym ibn Hammad, vr. 52a; al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 41)

The Mahdi will have a thick beard, and HIS FRONT TEETH WILL BE BRIGHT.

(Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr)

Distinguishing features on Hazrat Mahdi's (as) body, described in astonishing detail

There will be two moles on Hazrat Mahdi's (as) body, both the same color as those of our Prophet (saas)

Other information about Hazrat Mahdi (as) imparted by our Prophet (saas) is that he will have two separate moles, both the same color as those of the Prophet (saas):

Through his forefather , Imam Muhammad Bakir (a.s), Abu Ja’far has narrated that the chief of Ahl al-Bayt, Amirul Momineen (a.s)
proclaimed from the pulpit as, “In the last age a man (HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)])from my progeny would rise…HE WOULD HAVE TWO BEAUTY SPOTS ONE OF WHOM SHALL BE THE COLOR OF THE PROPHET. HE SHALL RISE UP.”

(Life of Imam Mahdi, Allama Bakir al-Shariff al-Quraysh)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) has the 'seal of the Prophethood' on his shoulder

Those accounts that describe the appearance of our Prophet (saas) speak of a sign on his back, between his shoulders. In Islamic reference sources and accounts, this sign between the Prophet’s (saas) shoulders is known as the “the Seal of Prophethood”.

It is related by al-Mustadrak from Wahb ibn Munabbih that other Prophets have had a mark of prophethood similar to that of our Prophet (saas), but that his is different:

"… Allah has sent no prophet without his having the mole (mark of Prophethood) on his right hand. But our Prophet Muhammad (saas) represents an exception. BECAUSE HIS MARK OF PROPHETHOOD IS BETWEEN HIS SHOULDER BLADES (NOT ON HIS RIGHT HAND). When our Prophet (saas) was asked about this, he said: "THIS MARK BETWEEN MY SHOULDER BLADES is like that of all the prophets before me…"

(From the translation of Tirmidhi’s book Shamail, Prof. Dr. Ali Yardım, Peygamberimizin Şemaili (Shamail ar-Rasul), Damla Press, 3 Edition, Istanbul, 1998, p. 73)

Some of the accounts describing our Prophet’s (saas) mark of prophethood are as follows:

Jabir ibn Samurah (ra) relates: “I SAW THE MARK OF PROPHETHOOD BETWEEN RASULULLAH’S (SAAS) SHOULDER BLADES.”

(At-Tirmidhi Imam Abu I'sa Muhammad, Ash-Shama’il as-Sharifa, Vol. 1, Hilal Press, Ankara, 1976, p. 36)

Abu Saib ibn Yazid relates that:

"MY EYE SAW THE SEAL OF THE PROPHET (SAAS) BETWEEN HIS SHOULDERS."

(Sunan Tirmidhi, 6:126)

Ibrahim b. Muhammed, one of the grandsons of Hazrat Ali (as), relates:

“In describing the characteristics of our Prophet (saas), my grandfather Hazrat Ali (as) would relate all the hadiths about the physical appearance of Rasulullah (saas) at length and say:
"THERE WAS THE SEAL OF PROPHETHOOD BETWEEN HIS SHOULDER BLADES. And he is the last of the Prophets."

(At-Tirmidhi Imam Abu I'sa Muhammad, Ash-Shama’il as-Sharifa, Vol 1. Hilal Press, Ankara, 1976, p. 38)

We are also told in the hadiths that, like the Prophet Muhammad (saas), Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have this clear sign, the "seal of prophethood"

The Mahdi will have the sign of our Prophet (saas) on his shoulder.

(al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 41)

The sign of the Prophet (saas) is on his (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) shoulder.

(Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah, p. 165; Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 23)

The mark of the Prophet (saas) is on his (HAZRAT MAHDI’S (AS)) shoulder.

(Barzanji, Al-Isha'ah, p. 163)

THE SEAL IS DARK IN COLOR AND COVERS THE SURFACE. In addition, this mark on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) back is fully described in terms of location by giving a certain measure.
Accounts say that every Prophet has had the mark of prophethood on his right hand. But the Prophet Muhammad’s (saas) seal of prophethood is described as “being at the level of the heart on the skin of the left shoulder blade.”

Therefore, the way the hadiths described Hazrat Mahdi (as) as having the seal of prophethood of our Prophet (saas) on his shoulder shows that Hazrat Mahdi (as) will also have “A DARK, WIDE MARK AT THE LEVEL OF THE HEART ON HIS LEFT SHOULDER BLADE.”

Hazrat Mahdi (as) has a mole shaped like a leaf on his shoulder blade

Another hadith refers to a second mark on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) back:

Abu Basir quotes Imam Muhammad Bakir (as) or Ja'far as-Sadiq (as) that he said: ... THERE WILL BE A LEAF BELOW AND TO THE LEFT OF HIS LEFT SHOULDER BLADE, JUST LIKE THE LEAF OF THE MYRTLE.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 253)

This second mark on Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) back is described in detail in the hadiths, saying that it will be BETWEEN HIS SHOULDER BLADES; ON THE LOWER LEFT OF THE LEFT SHOULDER BLADE.

The shape of the mark is also described in detail as resembling ‘A MYRTLE LEAF.’

The comparison with a ‘LEAF’ here suggests that ‘the mole will resemble a tree leaf with the edges being higher than the stem’ and that ‘it will be the color of a faded leaf’ in other words a yellowish or skin tone.

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a black mark on his right leg

In one hadith our Prophet (saas) says “HAZRAT Mahdi (as) will have a BLACK MARK on his RIGHT leg.”

Great detail is provided about this distinguishing feature of Hazrat Mahdi (as) in the hadiths. Our Prophet (saas) does not just speak of a mark, but provides distinctive detail, saying it will be BLACK and on his RIGHT LEG:

(Hazrat Mahdi (as)) WILL HAVE A BLACK MARK ON HIS RIGHT LEG.

(Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim Nomani, al-Ghaybah al-Nomani, p. 251)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will have a mole on his right thigh

In another tradition Hazrat Ali (a.s) again mentions about Imam Mahdi (a.s) in the
following words: “He shall have…A MOLE ON HIS RIGHT THIGH.”

(Yanabiul Mawaddah, p. 423)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come in this century and all people will know him from the signs in the hadiths

The information about Hazrat Mahdi (as) in the hadiths is highly detailed. Our Prophet (saas) provides no such detailed description of anyone else in the hadiths. The fact that such detailed information about Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) physical appearance is provided, as well as about his life, is a most important sign for Muslims awaiting Hazrat Mahdi (as) with great love and wishing to recognize him, and also a most exciting blessing.

The fact that the hadiths tell us that,
- Hazrat Mahdi (as) will assume the spiritual leadership of all Muslims,
- That he will be instrumental in uniting the whole Islamic world,
- That he will cause Islamic morality to rule the world by neutralizing all ideologies based on irreligion,
- He will come together with the Prophet Jesus (as) and act as his imam in the prayers,
- That he will be instrumental in the whole Christian world converting to Islam and
- He will intellectually neutralize the dajjal together with the Prophet Jesus (as),
As well as giving us all the other signs and the details of his physical appearance, will leave no doubt as to Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) identity when, by Allah’s leave, he finally appears. (Allah knows the truth.)
Following the appearance of Hazrat Mahdi (as), the world will live the peace, comfort and happiness longed for centuries since the Age of Happiness in the leadership of the Prophet Jesus (as) and Hazrat Mahdi (as).
And the Golden Age that will embrace all those beauties will come during the century that we are now living insha’Allah.
